Discussion: Do Tanning Beds Cause Cancer?

Tanning bed "abuse" causes cancer, not tanning beds themselves.  It is not appropriate to make a blank statement like "drugs kill", it is "drug abuse" that kills.  Of course we have all agreed for some time that the Sun causes skin cancer and the WHO has recently listed tanning beds, as well as the SUN, on the list of possible cancer causing stuff.

The World Health Organization lists tanning beds NEXT TO the Sun on the list of knowntanning beds do not cause cancer! tanning bed abuse does! carcinogens and responsibly publishes this document:
Solar UV Flyer
(click here to download this pdf file from the WHO)
which begins with "Sunlight is essential to health..." and ends with "but overexposure to UV light can be hazardous to your health".  Read this document and take the same approach to indoor tanning and you will be guided by the WHO in proper UV exposure!

Keep in mind, all of the commercial tanning beds on the market today have been tested by government regulators at the factory prior to being distributed to salons.  Each device, based on the number and wattage of lamps is "rated" for a "maximum" daily session and usually ranges from 8 to 20 minutes.  You may also choose tanning beds with high UVB (8.5% to treat skin diseases, etc) or low UVB (<2%) and even all UVA light which bronzes the dead layer of skin once melanin is present.

The most avid indoor tanner who tans every other day still would not receive as much UV light exposure from someone who walks 20 minutes to and from work each day without a hat or sunscreen.  A tanning bed is a very controlled environment in which the % of UVB never exceeds 8.5% and most advanced tanning devices utilize 1% UVB or 99% UVA devices.

Finally, doctors everywhere now prescribe, and insurance companies cover the cost, of tanning beds for patients with various skin diseases like psoriasis, etc, and studies have shown the benefits of indoor tanning beds include Vitamin D production and your body releases "endorphins" which helps relieve depression in the wintry months.

Now is the best time ever to start your own tanning salon because the recent economic downturn has caused a "consolidation" among tanning salons.  This means fewer tanning salons competing for more customers and some indoor tanners have to travel miles to the nearest salon. Read more here...
